REVO c9115 Leicester
Name: REVO Leicester
Date: Circa 1930s - 1950s
Genre: Decorative lantern
Lamp: 100W GLS

side #1
When I saw this lantern, I immediately recognised it as a REVO Leicester, one
of decorative examples from REVO's range. An elegant, symmetrical, hexagonal ornamental fitting,
it comprised of a cast iron dome and a brass frame.

bottom #1
Very popular in the 1930s, the Leicester was used for both decorative and street lighting. An option
with a directional lens dome refractor was supplied, but this example simply features an enamelled over-reflector.

top #1
Like many REVO lanterns from the period, it has the company's name on the lantern's canopy.
Measuring 12" at its widest, this is the C9115 model (for up to 200W GLS). Other models were even larger, being
used to light main streets.

night #1
Most REVO Leciesters survived until the 1950 and 1960s when they were replaced. One
example managed to hang on into the 1990s; a stray in Beckenham, Kent, which lit the main Croydon Road until sadly
replaced by a faceless SOX lantern.
I have no idea of the original purpose of this bracket, as it's definitely not a street lighting bracket. But it
performs its new task well.

The white over-reflector is held in place by three bolts which fit into three threaded holes in the lantern's canopy.
The bolts are modern replacements but everything else is original.
This shot clearly shows how the over-reflector is fitted in place, and how the bulbholder is fitted to that. I wonder
if the threaded extrusions holding the over-reflector in place were originally springed, thus providing anti-vibration
protection to the bulb.
This shot was taken after the first snowfall of February 2009.
