Unknown #3
This copper lantern is huge; probably the largest post top in the collection (it even stands taller than some of my
smaller swan necks).
The lantern was probably constructed in the 1950s, as manufacturers made such style lanterns
as part of their 'traditional' ranges for installation in squares, by sea fronts or outside civic buildings. It's styling
was inspired by the art-deco movement of twenty years previous.
Half of the dimpled original glass has gone, but replacement glass should be fairly easy to find. The wiring is original, and
the lantern originally took eight fluorescent tubes. This will be retained (see the bottom picture).
Although made of copper, the lantern has been painted with thick, copper-coloured paint.
It was originally installed somewhere in Blackpool and upon its removal was kept in storage. Many thanks to
John Thompson for tracking it down.
It is very, very similar to lanterns made by the GEC and REVO but doesn't have a maker's
mark anywhere. Until positive identification is made through a catalogue, this lantern will remain unknown.
