GEC Z8003 Lewisham

The third mercury lantern developed by the GEC was designed in the art-deco style for Lewisham in South London in the early 1930s. A popular design, it could be found in many towns around the UK.

Huge and bulky even by 1930s standards, the lantern disappeared in the 1960s and 1970s, when more compact and effecient lanterns replaced it.

This one was used as a Police lantern outside a station somewhere. It has lost most of its glass, and the GEC lampholder has also gone. But the framework is complete, and the lantern has kept its external top connecting box.

Lots of work, but these art-deco lights are beauties.
