front row

Exhibits installed along the front of the building.

The "Front Row" is probably the most photographed part of the collection. It consists of a row of decorative, mostly post-top lanterns, mounted on Group-B columns, arranged along the front of CU Phosco's office building.

Slender cast iron fluted column with single ladder bar and no base compartment. The top of the column features some interesting highly decorated embelishments both below and above the ladder bar. The foundry's name is cast into the fluting at the base of the column and reads "J. Bradshaw & Sons, Bolton". This was originally Exhibit 34 in the collection, presented by Bolton metropolitan Borough Council. It is fitted with a square post-top lantern which is possibly a modern reproduction.

Slender cast iron column with candy-twist pattern on the upper part of the shaft. The shaft itself terminates into a plain cylindrical base compartment decorated with two collars and terminating into a square based root. The column originally was Exhibit 30 which was described as a cast iron column with scrollwork. Fitted with a square lantern, believed to be by ESLA, with copper strips over the glass, plain sloping canopy and plain, flat frog which is attached to a Lucy time switch and fuse box. These lanterns were usually fitted with ESLA Bi-Multi fittings but this appears to be missing.

Short fluted cast-iron column. The bottom third of the column is also heavily fluted and expands into a square root section with xxxx Needs visit for boilerplate. The column was not part of the original inventory but can be seen in the Rodney Marshall photographs (the row of columns on the left of the "long shot down Main Drive.") The circular post-top lantern can also been seen in the Rodney Marshall photographs along the same row, but on a different column.

Short column with small ladder bar, plain circular column, and square base compartment with access door. The column was originally Exhibit 36 in the collection where it was described as "12ft. cast iron column used for gas lighting in the City of Aberdeen, with double ladder arm. Cast by Wm. McKinnon & Co. Ltd., Aberdeen". Fitted with a circular post-top lantern with frog. It's possibily Exhibit 9 in the original collection: "Georgian post top gas lantern with ornamental corona." However, the lantern shown here is not a gas lantern.

Plain fluted cast-iron column which tapers slightly to its base. This was originally Exhibit 11 in the collection: "Fluted cast iron column cast in 1892 by T. W. Williams & Sons of Swansea." Fitted with a plain square lantern, believed to be by ESLA. It has a plain sloping canopy, four faces subdivided by copper strips, and a flat frog which is attached to a Lucy back-to-back time switch and fuse box. Fitted with an ESLA Bi-Multi Group "A" 3-way reflector.
