35W SOX Reburbishment Scheme

A line of largely forgotten old 35W SOX lanterns are gradually being restored back to their original condition by the sterling efforts of a lighting engineer.

Originally installed in the 1950s to light a roadside path to a power station, the installation has faired reasonably well over the years, but many of the lantern's bowls have gone yellow with age, most have leaking gaskets, fuse box covers are missing, the brackets are rusty and several lanterns have been replaced with side entry Thorn Beta 5s (and so the finials have gone).

The pictures show how good these street lights look when restored: the lantern and bracket have been completely removed, the bracket shot-blasted and repainted, the lanterns restored and fitted with acrylic bowls. In some cases, new bracket arms have been threaded, and new finials added where the original had been sawn off.

Unfortunately the lighting engineer has run out of these lanterns (GEC Z9481s) and asks if anyone has any spare. Swaps or purchase can be negotiated. Contact me if you can help.

Lanterns: GEC Z9481 (circa late 1950s- late 1960s)
Bracket: REVO B31 (circa late 1940s - late 1960s)
