Clock. |
A reliable clock is of vital importance, and that used with this switch is the best produced for the purpose, having a
thoroughly reliable LEVER MOVEMENT. The escapement (including the pallets) is JEWELLED, reducing friction and consequently
wear to a minimum. It is also compensated for temperature and fitted with a non-magnetic Breguet hair spring.
Being of the level movement, the clock will work in any position, and will run for 45 days with
one winding. To ensure accurate time keeping throughout for such a period a fusee drive is employed. The whole is
enclosed in a spun brass dust-proof case. |
Switch. |
The switch is of simple construction, consisting of a metal fork dipping in mercury contained in two cups specially
constructed to prevent splashing. The switch has a quick make and break action, thus eliminating the possibility of maintaining
an arc. |
Terminals. |
These are large and substantial, to facilitate wiring. |
Insulation. |
The electrical parts are adequately insulated and withstand the usual high voltage flash tests. |
Case. |
The cases are made in two patterns, viz:-
- (1) Cast iron, watertight and stove enamelled - for outdoor use.
- (2) Cast iron, stone enamelled and provided with ebonite bushes for leading-in cables for indoor use.

Simplicity. |
The operating mechanism is exceptionally simple in design and action. The freedom from small levers and toggles
in the construction renders in exceptionally reliable in operation, this being an advantage over other time swithces. |
Sealing. |
The sealing arrangement is efficient and simple. |
Accessibility. |
By loosening two screws and detaching the wires, the whole switch and clock movement can be removed from the case. |
Adaptability. |
This apparatus is particularly suitable for
- Public street lighting
- Illumination of devices in shop windows after closing time.
- "All night" electric signs.

Salient Feature. |
This apparatus automatically adjusts the time of lighting and extinguishing the lamps according to the season of the year. |
Advantages. |
These, which will be readily appreciated, are :-
- (1) Saving in cost of current and life of lamps due to switching on and off at the correct time.
- (2) The setting is automatically effected day and day more accurately than it could be done by hand, thus avoiding the
continual loosening and tightening of the tappets which is unavoidable with hand setting and is detrimental to the
clocks. (NOTE: The space of about 1/16 of an inch on the dial of hand-set switches usually represents ¼ of an
hour; it is therefore not an easy matter to set the timing accurately by hand.
- (3) Lower maintenance costs and more reliable operation of the time switches, due to the fact that they do not have to
be handled in any way beyond winding.
