CLEARSIDE 5590 LANTERN
FOR OSRAM MERCURY, SODIUM OR TUNGSTEN FILAMENT LAMPS

Specification
Clearside 5590

USE
Side road lighting, M.O.T. Group 'B' roads, mounting height 13-18 ft., road widths 30-40 ft.

LAMPS
Z5590: 60-200 watt B.S. Osram pearl.
Z5591: 80 watt or 125 watt Osram MB/U mercury lamps.
Z5592: 60-200 watt E.S. Osram pearl.
Z5598: 45 watt Osram sodium lamp.
Z5599: 80 watt or 125 watt Osram MBF/U colour corrected mercury lamps.

MOUNTING
Top entry, requires 1 in. of threaded ¾ in. B.S.P. When fully home the pipe is gripped by a ¼ in. diameter Allen type grub-screw.

LANTERN BODY
Die-cast aluminium alloy. The lampholder is fitted to an adjustable bridge piece which fits on bosses located in the top of the lantern. A dome refractor fits on to a white enamelled refractor plate and is secured by two springs. The outer glassware is secured in a die-cast ring of the same material as the body and is fastened to the main casting by a hinge and a toggle catch, both of stainless steel. A tropicalised felt gasket is fitted in the lower rim of the lantern body, and when the lantern is closed this makes a weatherproof joint with the rim of the bowl.

LAMPHOLDER
The lampholder can be porcelain B.C. or E.S. for tungsten lamps or porcelain 3 B.C. for mercury discharge lamps.

OPTICAL SYSTEMS
Wembley
A single piece prismatic glass dome refactor controls the light distribution, of which three forms are available:
  1. Symmetrical all-round distribution with Z6502 (ref. letter 'S') dome refractor.
  2. 160 deg. non-axial asymmetric, main light output up and down the street just away from the kerb with Z6508 (ref. letter 'N') dome refractor.
  3. Axial asymmetric, main light output directed up and down the street, with Z6514 (ref. letter 'A') dome refractor.

OUTER GLOBE

Five forms of outer globes are available: Clear glass globe Z6465 (ref. letter 'C'), clear Diakon globe Z6768 (ref. letter 'P'), unbreakable Diakon globe Z6798, rimpled Perspex globe Z6775 (ref. letter 'RP'), or rimpled glass globe Z6475 (ref. letter 'R').

Note - It is necessary to quote the reference letter that identifies the light distribution and enclosing globe required.

Oxford
The 'Oxford' optical system consists of a Z6502 symmetric prismatic glass dome refractor (ref. letter 'S') and a Z6605 prismatic glass shallow bowl refractor (ref. letter 'B'). The light distribution is 170 deg. non-axial asymmetric and gives better results than are obtained with the 'Wembley' distribution. The bowl refractor carries curved prisms on its interior surface which give the necessary redirection and diffusion of light. The exterior is smooth.

The Z5590SB lantern fitted with a shallow prismatic glass bowl refractor.

The above iso-candela diagram is taken from a Z5590B lantern fitted with an 80-watt MBF/U Osram lamp with an average through life output of 2320 lumens.

Directional intensity ratio: 2.5:1
Light above horizontal: 33%
Light output ratio: 75%
Lumens in the lower hemisphere: 1,160

An alternative outer bowl is the Z6604 which has a 'four way' distribution. The bowl should be used if the road is tree lined or if the lighting is intended primarily for pedestrians. It is particularly effective in residential side roads.

If the lantern is to be used with a 45-watt sodium lamp, the Z6608 deep refractor bowl must be specified.

If the lantern is required for the general lighting of an area, such as a court, the stepped opal globe Z6466 should be used. No dome refractor is necessary.

The lantern will not accept the Z6708 'Plastifractor' bowl.

WEATHERING FINISH
The light alloy body is specially selected for its resistance to corrosion. Further protection is obtained by the use of a suitable primer, undercoat and matt aluminium finish top coat.

Z5590 B/4 Lantern with
residential side road bowl
refractor for mercury lamps

The photograph illustrates the Z5590SB/4 lantern opened and fitted with a four-beam distribution prismatic glass bowl refractor. The bowl has an entirely new type of light distribution with four main beams so directed that glare is reduced to a minimum and a high uniformity of lighting is obtained over the whole road.

Light distribution from a lantern fitted with this type of bowl refractor are reproduced below.

The above polar curve diagram is taken from a Z5590 B/4 lantern fitted with an 80-watt Osram mercury MB/U lamp with an average through life output of 2320 lumens.
