Clearmain 9454/5C And 9464/5C Lanterns
For Osram Sodium Lamps

Specification Clearmain 9454/5C And 9464/5C

Use
Main road lighting, roundabouts, roads in the vicinity of airfields, doct and waterside lighting. This lantern has a cut-off distribution and no light is emitted above the horizontal. The peak candle power is at about 70 deg. to the vertical and above this angle the intensities fall off very rapidly, therefore lanterns should be mounted at 25 ft (7.62 m) and spaced not more than 95-100 ft (28.96 - 30.48 m) apart. Best results are obtained by arranging the lanterns in line. The light distribution characteristics make the lantern suitable for waterside lighting where, for navigational purposes, it is generally necessary for lights to be shielded. Excellent results are also obtained at roundabouts where a cut-off distribution assists visibility.

Lamps
140W Osram integral jacket sodium lamp type SOI/H or detachable jacket lamp type SO/H.

Mounting
The Z9454'C' or Z9464'C' side entry lantern requires not less than 5 in (127.0 mm) of horizontal unthreaded 1.1/4 in. B.S.P. When fully home two 7/16 in diameter Allen type grub screws grip the barrel. Water running along the bracket arm is prevented from entering the lantern by a water baffle. The Z9455'C' and Z9465'C' top entry lanterns are tapped 1 1/4 in. B.S.P. and are supplied with a locknut.

Lantern Body
One-piece light alloy die-casting. In the Z9454'C' lantern the inner surface of the body is white enamelled to act as an over-reflector. The body carries a lamp steady and lampholder wired with heat resisting insultated wire to a porcelain terminal block. An earthing screw and porcelain cable cleat are provided. In the Z9464'C' lantern, the body is fitted with a transformer and power factor correction capacitor which are screwed to bosses in the casting. Covering the gear is an over-reflector finished in glossy synthetic white enamel. The over-reflector carries the lamp steady.

The lampholder is wired with heat resisting insulting wire to the terminal block on the transformer. Fuses can be fitted if required.

Optical System
Light control is provided by two super-purity anodised aluminium reflectors fixed on to each inner side of a Perspex bowl. The upper portion of the bowl is finished silver whilst the underside is clear.

Weathering Finish
The metals used are specially selected for their resistance to corrosion. Further protection is obtained by the use of a special one-coat self-etching heavy-bodied aluminium stove enamel on the lantern body and retaining ring.

The iso-candela diagram is based on an average lamp light output through life from a 140W Osram integral sodium lamp (9,800 lumens average, applicable at time of print).

Directional intensity ratio: 2.19:1
Light above horizontal: Nil
Light output ratio: 62.5%
Lumens in the lower hemisphere: 6,125

Light distribution data are given for the guidance of the lighting engineer and represent the average results of laboratory tests on a number of lanterns taken at random from stock. The data are based on the lamp characteristics stated; if the latest lamp efficiency is different, the candela or lumen values should be calculated in direct proportion to the relative lamp lumens.

Lantern weights:
Z9454'C': 15 lb (6.80 kg)
Z9455'C': 14 lb (6.35 kg)
Z9464'C' complete with gear: 33 lb (15.0 kg)
Z9465'C' complete with gear: 31 lb (14.1 kg)
