"Between 1894 and 1900 a big change came in my experience. These
years were spent with Messrs. Johnson And Phillips Ltd., in the arc lamp shops
at Charlton. Arc lamps had apparently become the thing. Carbon lamps that were non-focusing
were rarely made, and added to the single-pair type a design for two pairs was
developed. Lamps were made by the thousand and were despatched everywhere. The obstacles
in the way of type of electricity generation were overcome. Direct, alternating,
