Philips Street Lighting

This is the street lighting section of a larger Philips brochure which probably dates from 1973. Interestingly many of the lanterns pictured were also produced by other manufacturers; namely Phosco and ELECO. It isn’t known who originally designed these lanterns and who made them under license. (I suspect Philips made them under license in the UK as they had their own established, different range in Europe.)

Introduction

Designed to accommodate the needs of every streetlighting application, the 'M' range includes lanterns for use with high pressure mercury, high and low pressure sodium discharge light sources, with integrally or remotely mounted lamp control gear.

The 'M' range comprises four sections, each section designed to meet the need of a particular area of the streetlighting market.

MOtorway Range
Information on a large range of lanterns for use on motorway lighting projects is available on request. Enquires should be referred to your nearest Philips Sales Office. All lanterns are identified by the prefix MO within the catalogue range.

MAjor Range
Provides lanterns for use on Group 'A' roads. All lanterns are identified by the prefix MA within the catalogue number.

MInor Range
Provides lanterns for use on Group 'B' roads. All lanterns are identified by the prefix MI within the catalogue number.

MUnicipal Range
Provides lanterns for use on municipal area lighting projects. All lanterns are identified by the prefix MU within the catalogue number.

All 'M' range lanterns are manufactured from materials of the highest quality and designed with the needs of the streetlighting engineer in mind. This philosophy is expressed in terms of:

  • High output lanterns
  • Minimum maintenance
  • Simple relamping
  • Corrosion-resistant finish
  • Ease of installation
  • With economy in operation the keynote
