Damaged Column
This Type 6B column in the installation at Nottingham was damaged by a 10-ton driverless lorry.
The lorry ran away down an incline and struck the column a heavy blow with its bumper-guard.
|
Rebounding from the column, the lorry ran across the pavement and completely demolished a 9" brick wall.
Despite the weight of the blow it received, the column suffered only superficial damage and was repaired by a
Stanton engineer in a very short time.
|
The strength given to concrete by centrifugal spinning and the added strength of steel reinforcement,
enabled this column to withstand the heavy blow it received without snapping off to endanger passing
pedestrians.
|
The illustration on the right shows the 9" wall demolished by the lorry. The column is still in service today
and is indistinguishable from the remainder of the columns in the installation at Nottingham.
