In 1896, the London County Council (LCC) effectively panicked, realising that they didn’t have sufficient
asylum space, despite gaining several asylums from neighbouring counties. (Cane Hill was ‘stolen’ from
Surrey County Council in 1888, with the LCC quickly extending it for 2000 patients - but it was not
enough).
Therefore they purchased the 1060 acre Epsom Estate and started building frantically.
The first to be built was Manor Hospital...
