I drove into the grounds of derelict Hellingly Asylum, abandoned Hellingly Asylum, deserted Hellingly Asylum and was shown to a parking place by the boiler house by a marshal. We squeezed in by all the other cars and walked to the front of the hospital.

The burnt out Admin Block was the finish of a 10K road race, spectators were lining the road and a tanoy barked unintelligible amplification.

We found Laurence in the crowd. He was smiling. “Don’t worry. I’ve found a way in around the back. A gap in the fence. It’s well out of the way and not overlooked.”

(Left: Once through the window and you’re in the rubble and collapsed ceilings of Hellingly. This was once a day room, and only the armchairs, now used as climbing frames by everyone, point to an earlier use).
