We emerged from the blocked and battered subways and took the main corridors instead. Hellingly closed in 1994, and after a brief use as a paintball venue, it swiftly succumbed to dereliction. But the level of disintegration was worse than Cane Hill, a building which was twenty years older, and had been closed longer. These old Victorian asylums were built well – so the natural destruction of Hellingly was a mystery.
