Rauceby was simply a scaled down version of Hine’s popular echelon design. Interestingly, he couldn’t provide
a continuous route through the wards (as he did for Bexley and his subsequent designs) - this was
probably due to space considerations.
Therefore some of the wards required returning to the main semi-circular corridor which
travelled from one end of the hospital to the other. In this way, the design represented his first large asylum plan at Claybury.
