AN ODE TO CANE HILL

Cane Hill published its own newsletter which was distributed to all departments around the hospital. Called "Yellow Pages" (in reference to the yellow pages used for its photocopying), this weekly publication included hospital information, advertisements, classifieds and announcements.

A collection of issues were found in the Pharmacy. Dated 1991, they were mostly concerned about the closure of the remaining hospital facilities. In amongst the dwindling news and the eventual closure (in a last issue, staff were asked to clear their own desks into black bin-liners provided), a patient penned a final epitaph: An Ode To Cane Hill.

AN ODE TO CANE HILL

"Cane Hill was built many years ago,
For the sad and helpless people that society was frightened to know.
But Cane Hill changed with the generations that followed,
To become a place of love and understanding where you knew you could go,
To get the support if you if you wanted it so.
When we found out Cane Hill was to close,
Many doubts and uncertainties arose.
Don't be sad when Cane Hill is no more,
Just think of its closing as an opening of another door."
