In November 1988, E. Townsend was given the merry task of figuring out
the fire provisions on each of the wards. This entailed counting the hose reels,
fire alarms, fire alarm bells, fire alarm indicator lights, fire exits, smoke detectors and escape routes. By the Chaucer ward, I think the task was getting a little dull, as Mr. Townsend cheekily marked an ‘escape route’ clearly re-entering the burning building. But he’s done us a great favour. For armed with a sketch pad, he roughly drew each ward, annotating ward offices, stores, kitchens and nurses offices. For us explorers, he’s also drawn on the stairs and toilets. When combined with the main map, his sketches allow even more labeling of individual rooms. So although Mr. Townsend’s fire inventory was admirable, it was of no use during the active life of the hospital. But they have become invaluable now. Are you E. Townsend? Please mail in if so. How do you feel about being immortalized here? What was it like going around Cane Hill counting the fire hoses? And just how pissed off were you when someone didn’t give you a map until the flipping Salter ward?
