The fire plans folder and a nice wall sticker.

Far more interesting - some original fire plans. Picture by Laurence.

Fire Plans
This folder of joy (well, actually tedious fire regulations but I will attempt to make it sound half way
interesting) will be written up at a later date.
However, Laurence found something far more interesting - what looks like some
fire precautions from the 1930s.
Cane Hill Mental Hospital
FIRE PRECAUTIONS
- No fires allowed in the Nurses' or Servant's rooms without special
permission from the Inspector or Matron. Smoking strictly prohibited in the buildings,
except in those places specially set apart for that purpose. All matches and pipes to be
cllected from patients before going to bed.
- The person in charge of each Ward, Shop, Laundry, Workroom, Store, or any other
separate place, before going off duty for the night shall see that all fires (except those that
are allowed to remain burning) are put out; that all lamps are properly trimmed,
in case it should be necessary to cut off the gas; that four buckets are left full of water in
each Ward, Scullery, and Laundry; and that the hydrant-boxes are unlocked. The responsible
Officer shall forthwith report any carelessness or neglect of those orders to the
Medical Superintendent.
- No burning coals or hot cinders to the carried from one grate to another for the
purpose of kindling fires, etc. On no account shall Wax mixture be put on the fire or gas rings.
- Any escape of Gas should be reported at once, day or night, to the Fireman or the
Foreman Engineer.
- On no account shall a room in which there is an escape of Gas be entered by any person
with a light, unless it has been thoroughly ventilated first, by opening the windows and door.
- A box of Sand is to be kept in each hydrant-box to extinguish Turpentine or
Mineral Oils, should they ignite.
FIRE - PRACTICAL HINTS
- As draught tends to increase a Fire it is remembered that all Doors, Windows and
Ventilators in a burning apartment are to be kept closed as far as circumstances will permit.
- A person may breathe in a dense smoke by placing a wet towel or handkerchief over the nose
and mouse, and crawling on the hands and knees with the face near the floor.
- A small leakage of Gas can be stopped temporarily by means of a piece of Soap - a broken
Gas Pipe or Bracket by a Cork.
- Should a Dress catch fire, roll the person in a Blanket or Rug and put her on the floor.
Do not let her rush about.
- Should Turpentine or Mineral Oil ignite, use Sand only, as water only spreads the flames.
- Should a Chimney catch alight, throw Sand or Salt on the fire in the grate to put it out.
