Cane Hill Project

A 'thumbnail' of the fun that is... Cane Hill

Impressive or what? Cane Hill’s internal glories, exposed for all to see.

Unfortunately not the original blueprints, but obviously a photocopy of them. It was probably used by the on-site maintainance team for site navigation, doodling of important notes and for those likely to get lost.

No date but it’s definitely Cane Hill as we know and love it. Other plans on the Internet have shown the wards as numbered, and are missing Hill, Johnson, Kings, Ligett wards and the nurses’ block. Historically very important, but its nice to find something more complete.

Another interesting features are the gardens (or 'airing courts') each shared by three wards. I didn’t know if the octagonal shaped entities in each garden represented ornate greenhouses, UFO landing areas or were some mapping device. Ian Richards informed me that they were ornate octagonal shelters where patients could sit - rectangular examples remained at Severalls. And I found very similar examples at Rauceby (pictured). Unfortunately, all of these have been lost at Cane Hill.

I have not attempted to de-munge the photocopy in any way, but have cleared it up digitally for the other maps and plans on this site. Here I present it ‘as-is’ for the purists. Unfortunately the original photocopier managed to tilt the plans, which I’ve rotated back. Round one to me.

However, he/she also managed to clip the admin block off the front of the photocopy. No excuses for that. So, hand on heart, I can only reveal 99% of Cane Hill. Round two to the sloppy photocopier.

Anyway, here’s some bigger scans, before you ruin your eyesight on the one above:
