Cane Hill Project

Excuse me? Where are the nurses' training these days?

This little schematic block diagram of Cane Hill was obviously produced to help those quickly find their way around the hospital, but who would’ve got confused by the room, corridor and door principle shown on the main Cane Hill map.

It’s great for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s the whole grounds, so the buildings and fields on the periphery can now be identified. Plus, we’ve got some more descriptive names, such as the "Staff Cafeteria", the "Fire Station" and "Tip To Toe" beauticians.

By taking this information, combining it with the main map, the ultimate guide to Cane Hill can be created.

Which brings me onto the reasons as to why it’s crap. It doesn’t make too much sense when combined with the main map. Sure, Ellis and Faraday wards are in the same place, but Andrews/Alleyn has moved around the corner, Browning/Blake is a shadow of its former self, where is the E.C.T. Unit is supposed to be (the middle of the footpath by my reckoning) and the Tip To Toe beauticians is easily the same size as any Ward in the entire hospital. Were the patients of Cane Hill particularly ugly or was the mapmaker more concerned with getting eight capital letters into a box? Methinks the later.

Still, once these areas are explored, all will become clear, and this little diagram will be a most helpful resource.

Another very important note is that the plan shows some wards as closed. Obviously produced towards the end of the life of the hospital, it gives the first account of how it was all shut down. Faraday, Guy, Ruskin, Shaftsbury, Turner, Vincent, York, Wren, Wesley, York, Zachary and the Men’s Hair Dresser had all closed. (The ladies were in luck as their hairdresser was still going).

Don't strain your eyes. Here's some better ones:
