Trying to fit 'Resocialisation Unit' in its tiny box was fun
A more up-to-date varient of the ever-popular, ever-confusing Cane Hill Schematic was found inside the pages
of the Patient's Handbook. Obviously intended to help, it's so bad that I wonder anyone could
find their way around the place.
So, part from the natty blue print and rusting staples, what had happened to Cane Hill between the two plans. Well, quite a lot:
- Johnson/Jenner ward had closed.
- Lidgett had closed (so the pool table was out-of-bounds but the piano was still accessible in downstairs Lettsom).
- Lettsom had become the Resocialisation Unit. That explains the piano. Marvel how they fitted 'Resocialisation Unit' in that tiny, tiny box.
- The portcabin kitchen off Lettsom was now open and marked on the main map. The old central kitchen was now just a Plate Wash.
- Mapother had closed.
- Ellis was now being used for Elderly Occupational Therapy and Occupational Health.
- The infamous Rehab-Teams-Dickens (what the Dickins was that?) was now the equally confusing I.C.U. But, thanks to everyone who mailed in, I now
know this was the Intensive Care Unit.
- Cruden was now being used for Physiotherapy which had moved from the now closed Ruskin Ward.
- The Recreation Room is now the Pop-In.
- As mentioned the central kitchens were now effectively closed, just being used as a plate wash. Other encroachments include the
Inital Offices (so the Laundry was probably being run down) and a Photocopying room.
- The Staff Rest Room isn't marked, but that was just probably a wily guise by the staff to stop them being bothered during breaks.
- Andrews had closed.
- ECT was now joined by ECG.
- Pugin and Paxton were now closed.
- The Psychology Department was gone, now replaced with Bromley Rehab. Which I presume was rehabilitation in Bromley. So, the residents of Coulsdon didn't
really have too much to worry about.
- Nightingale and the Taylors room were also closed, effectively meaning that the entire right side of the hospital was now boarded up and out of use. No
wonder it's in such a state now.
- The Staff Hostel was now mixed (hurrah!) and they now had parking (double hurrah!)
- Most of the offices around the Chapel and scattered through Admin appear to be the same, except this map shows them much better.
Don't strain your eyes. Here's the better one:
