CROYDON ADVERTISER: READERS LETTERS (MAY 2002)

Andrew Tierney wrote to the Croydon Advertiser in 2002 to find out more about the history of the hospital, staff and patients. He was pleased when his letter appeared in the Letters section along with a photograph of the Administration Block.

MYSTERY OF ASYLUM'S PAST

I am currently investigating the history of the closed Cane Hill asylum in Coulsdon, and would like to get in contact with any former employees or patients, or anyone who was involved with the hospital.

The hospital buildings are now subject to arson attacks and are threatened with demolition despite new security measures, and our goal is to fully research and document the site's history before it is too late. We are also taking steps to ensure that the more important aspects of the hospital, such as the water tower, intricate facade, clocktower and chapel are preserved during any redevelopment.

Although many of the asylum records are available to us, we need to hear invaluable first-hand accounts of what life in the hospital was like. These were never written down, and with tiem they are becoming harder to obtain.

If you have interesting stories to tell and happy or sad memories of the buildings or groudns, or any photographs, films or videos, then please get in contact. I will keep a record of all correspondence and will endeavour to put people in touch with one another, if requested.

If you have access to the internet, then go to www.urbex.org.uk, or www.canehill.com, both of which contain information and pictures about the hospital.

Thank you for any help.
