ESLA Bi-Multi Group 'AL' Four-Way 90° 90° 90° 90°
An eBay win, this is a very special ESLA. Whilst the two-ways are the most common, 3-ways are
rare by comparison, and 4-ways are extremely rare. They were produced for lighting crossroads, the four main
beams being used to shine down each road segment.
Such specialised lighting was therefore only used sparingly; by the 1950s, Waldram was arguing the
case for lighting T-junctions and cross-roads by the use of 2-way lanterns placed beyond the junction itself; the driver
could then see junctions by the gap in the shadow of the kerb.
I've never seen a 4-way ESLA in-situ.
After taking this picture, I scraped the paint from the wings and revealed its angular schedule; perfectly symmetrical
it was a 90° 90° 90° 90°.
