venner ltd (stand no. 17 & 18)
Published in: Public Lighting Engineer No. 77, Vol. 18, Conference Special 1953

At the Venner stand could be seen a selection fo their extensive range of Time Switches, which have been designed to meet the varying needs of all types of Public Lighting Installations.

Also shown were some of the boxes which Venners can supply for street lighting use. These vary from small, yet robust cast metal cases for containing the time switch in the base of street lighting columns to weatherproof types for wall or spigot mounting. The latter types of boxes, which can be supplied with separate compartments for the time swtich and double-pole load fuses are particularly suited to existing handswitch or gas conversions utilising the existing lamp columns.

For the modern fluorescent lighting now becoming very popular the small synchronous motor driven, solar dial double circuit switch type MSDC was of particular interest. This type will switch on all the tubes in each lantern at sunset, switching a proportion off at midnight or other set time, leaving the remaining tubes illuminated until sunrise. A considerable saving in running cost is thus effected during the hours when full brilliance lighting is not usually required. This switch can also be supplied to effect a similar control for columns having main and subsidiary lighting, swithcing the former OFF and the latter ON from say midnight to 5 a.m., then switching the main lighting ON again and the subsidiary lighting OFF until sunrise.

The ideal of Venner design is indicated by the fact that for this particular application allowance can be made for the warming up time necessary for sodium and mercury discharge lamps before the subsidiary lighting is switched off.

Although power cuts are now more infrequent than they were a frew years ago, a small time switch with spring reserve is still in great demand, particularly for scattered or rural areas. The perfect answer to this problem is the Venner type TJSSP time swtich with nine hours spring reserve, designed so that it is small enough to fit in any lamp post, yet large enough for long life and easy maintenance.

In addition to time switches, samples of the Venner Zebra Flasher, of which 12,000 have now been supplied, were shown.

Venner time switches can, of course, be supplied with all thevarious types of clocks that may be required - 15 or 35 day hand wound, synchronous motor driven, both with and without spring reserve, and electrically wound clocks with spring reserve for use on A.C. or D.C. supplies. They are available in single, double or triple pole pattern for controlling loads from 5 to 300 amperes.
