Driven by clockwork, the controller operates using two tappets set at predetermined times. The tappets actuate a rocker arm which simulataneously opens/closes the gas to the burner and closes/opens the valve to the byepass. It is instantaneous in action and can be set to operate once or twice every twenty-four hours with a two hour gap. The Solar Dial had two tappets for switching on and off, both which could be advanced or retarded one hour. An additional tappet was fitted for half-night switching and which switched off between 11PM and 1AM. If required an additional tappet could be fitted for part-night switching and allowed switching on between 4AM and 7AM.
