AEI Lamp & Lighting is established as a separate entity from AEI in 1956. It takes control of the
BTH (Mazda),
Metropolitan Vickers (Cosmos),
Siemens and
Ediswan brands. Gradually the manufacturing
concerns of these companys are transferred to Leicester and the old company names are retired.
Facing financial difficulties in 1958/9, AEI sells 5.5% of AEI Lamp & Lighting to Thorn Electrical Industries
and the GEC.
AEI becomes a trading name and replaces the old
BTH (Mazda),
Metropolitan Vickers (Cosmos),
Siemens and
Ediswan brands in 1959.
Thorn takes a controlling share in the company in 1964 after purchasing 64% of the stock. It also
forms British Lighting Industries, a holding company, to pool all its lamp and luminaire manufacturing in
the same year.
Thorn purchases the final 35% of the company in 1967. All manufacturing then transferred to
British Lighting Industries, where the ranges are merged and consolidated. (AEI itself
is taken over by the GEC in 1968).
