philulex n.a.
Lantern not used in the UK. For town-centre lighting. A "globe-band fitting" which,
owing to the screening effect of the opalescent glass, the light
emerging in a lateral direction (angle from the vertical) is just sufficient to keep facades
illuminated. The brightness of the globe causes very little glare as
a large portion of the visual field remains light and the mean
brightness is fairly high. Used thorough Belgium in town centres in the 1930s.

Lantern not used in the UK. For traffic thoroughfare lighting.
Screened concentraing reflector. Used where
"dazzle" (glare) is a very influential factor (dark sky, much lower brightness of
road surface). The screened light source has been used throughout Belgium in the 1930s
on remote traffic routes and arterial roads.

philulex ???.
Lantern not used in the UK. Introduced in 1936. For town-centre lighting.
Prompted by the development of the first MB lamp. Used with a tungsten filament lamp
to create a blended mercury light for use in town centres. The MB lamp is small enough
to be used with a 150-200W GLS lamp in a "globe band fitting." The lantern was designed to
replace the n.a. lamps; moreover the GLS lamp can be part-night and extingushed
during the night.
Designed as a "globe-band fitting" which,
owing to the screening effect of the opalescent glass, the light
emerging in a lateral direction (angle from the vertical) is just sufficient to keep facades
illuminated. The brightness of the globe causes very little glare as
a large portion of the visual field remains light and the mean
brightness is fairly high. Used thorough Belgium in town centres from 1936s onwards.

Winner: Design Council Award 1975
Complies with: BS 1788, BS 4533: Part 2: Section 2.7: 1976 and CIE 12
IP23
Introduced in 1974 for modern motorways and major roads. Designed to be similar to existing (European) MA SOX range.
Part of a family of lanterns with 90W, 135W and 180W versions. Unique optics provide both
'semi cut-off' and 'cut-off' distriubtion. Has a DLOR of 0.74 (cut-off) and 0.75 (semi cut-off). (A simple adjustment of lampholder and lamp support bracket
provides the two distibutions). Lantern comprises of three interchangeable modules
(injection moulded acrylic prismatic bowl, glass fibre re-inforced polyester (GRP) canopy and spigot entry) which minimises stock of spares and provides greater visible
uniformity on lighting schemes. Spigot allows side-entry mounting on 42/48mm o.d. spigots 100mm long.
Spigot entry can also include
optional integral hinged gear shoe providing a gear-in-head capacity. Hinged gear shoe can be released
from safety catches for complete replacement. Electrical connections made by plug and socket and
integral gear version incorporates replaceable cartridge fuse. Module construction offers
easier installation, maintenance and lower maintenance stock. GRP canopy formed by special
pressing method giving smooth surface, and prevents inherent stresses from forming in the
canopy during construction. GRP canopy is self-coloured white and includes an additive to improve
UV resistance. Light in weight, resistant to chemical and weather influences and will not discolour.
Lamp compartment is housed in canopy module separate from control gear module; a specification
requirement now in force in many countries for motorway lighting. All internal wiring is heat
resistant. Low profile canopy with low drag to minimise the windage area and so reduce the stress on
the column. Acceptable to the Department of the Environment. Can also be fitted with optional
3-pin twist one-part photocell. Length is 1066mm or 1249mm with gear shoe.
